Chemical Detection: Empowering Harrisburg’s Youth to Protect Our Environment
At the Boys & Girls Club of Harrisburg, our commitment to our community goes beyond the walls of our clubhouses. Through our Clean Water Initiative, we are teaching our members that they have the power to protect the natural resources that sustain us, such as the Susquehanna River. One of the most exciting ways we do this is by introducing our teens to the science of Chemical Detection—a vital tool in environmental conservation.
Hands-On Science with a Purpose In our STEM and "Power Hour" sessions, we explore how Chemical Detection helps scientists identify pollutants before they harm local wildlife or our drinking water. By learning how to use simple testing kits to detect nitrates, phosphates, and pH levels, our youth aren't just doing "homework"—they are becoming junior environmental scientists. This hands-on experience builds the self-esteem and character needed to become the responsible citizens Harrisburg needs.
Safety First: Job No. 1 Just as we prioritize safety in our gym and classrooms, Chemical Detection technology is used globally to keep public spaces safe. By teaching our members about the sensors that monitor air quality and water safety, we are showing them how technology can be used for the greater good. It’s part of our mission to provide vocational programs that prepare our youth for the high-tech, high-impact careers of tomorrow.
Investing in Great Futures When our partners like Capital Region Water and PENNVEST support our initiatives, they aren't just investing in infrastructure—they are investing in the curious minds of our kids. Understanding the basics of Chemical Detection is often the first step toward a career in chemistry, engineering, or environmental law.
Join us as we continue to provide a safe place for Harrisburg's youth to learn, grow, and protect the world they will one day lead. Because at BGCHBG, we know that Great Futures Start Here.
